My brother just moved into north lake and he is having connection issues with the qwest fiber optic. Since I've never had a fiber connection, is there anything they he needs in the house? I know with DSL and Cable you need a modem/box in the house. Is there something similar for optic? The qwest rep he has is being useless and won't call him back, qwest help is no help either they cannot find him in the system etc.

Chances are, which ever connection he's trying to use isn't connected in the basement. The box only has so many connections so not all of the ones in the house can be connected at once (at least in my house!). Have him check other outlets to verify, if a few are working than that's whats wrong. You can switch them out in the basement but the trick is that they aren't labeled so it's a guessing game. I recommend 2 people to solve it! Oh, and the box should already be in the house on a board usually hung in the utility room. If it's not there, then he needs to call quest and have them come install in (which the builder should've had him do when he moved in).

I'll keep the editorial comment brief: the residents assailed Don Whyte (President of KL and a Daybreak resident) with stories about the substandard service in comparison to the cost and the contract came up for renewal with Qwest. Qwest promised "to do better" so Don decided to extend the contract for an unknown term. I guess we can include Qwest in the list of prevaricators with KL and the HOA.

Now, to the issue at hand (and the history of Qwest's mis-steps is long and legendary, here in Daybreak) - have your brother call Jason Duran. He's an excellent Qwest Network Technician (if he's still with the company and I think he is). His wireless number is 801 661-8756 and his pager (yikes!) is 801 482-5586.

The router which Qwest picked, after much testing, is substandard and we had to buy our own...another story.

Sentinel, I had heard that the contract had been renewed also from the Qwest reps. I received an email from Bruce this morning saying that the contract hasn't been renewed yet. I sent Bruce and Don a table of broadband pricing from Qwest (fiber and DSL outside of Daybreak), mStar via UTOPIA in SLC, Comcast in SLC, Verizon Fiber and AT&T DSL. When stacked up against everyone else pricing it was evident that our $7/meg rate was poorly negotiated especially when any resident within Daybreak could have gone month to month with Comcast or Qwest DSL for only 14 to 15 cents more per meg.

Since the contract has not been renegotiated yet according to Bruce I'm hoping we can put some pressure on KL to do much better or to just walk away from the table and let the residents choose their own Internet service.

Lance, I'd like to see the group push for better service and support in additon to cost.

Wait, that means Qwest would never have another contract for Daybreak.

Pricing for internet access is always dropping. Two years, $35 for a 5mb line was a really good bargain. However, in today's market, it's an ok rate. Qwest is even offering a 7mb line for $25/month (for a year) for new customers, and $37/month (for life) for a 7mb line. I would glady spend $2 more to get the extra 2mb.

Is there any way for me to cancel my HOA internet access fee and go with Qwest on my own? Probably not.

I hope HOA or whoever do a better job negotiating the contract.
